stoep skryf "After successful runs at both Oude LIbertas Theatre (Stellenbosch) and at this year’s KKNK festival in Oudtshoorn our artists return home triumphantly and are excited to presented STOK: Bal at the Performer in Menlo Park on 2 May 2003.
Jan Beukes, Leon Ecroignard and Wouter van de Venter are the permanent members of STOK. All three are formidable musicians and they collaborate to create stupendous theatre. To quote some recent reviews: “What is really striking about this production is its boldness and tenacity. It audaciously goes where music hasn’t really gone before” Cape Argus, 28 Feb 2003. And “Ja, dié is fisieke teater op sy hoendervleiskry-lekkerste. Dit is 'n vorm van skouspel-cum-visuele teater, oftewel multidissiplinêre performance-kuns, wat Shakespeare se idee dat die lewe 'n verhoog is, die raakste uitbeeld” Die Burger 28 Feb 2003.
Stok was born someone years ago when Jahn and Leon started messing about during a technical rehearsal for another performance. Chaos was born, Art shuddered, and the result is the show that you are about to see. Add Wouter van de Venter to the mix and you have a lethal trio – an experience not to be missed.
In essence, Stok respectfully pokes fun at “Serious Art”. “We found much of the inspiration for the show by having spent most of our lives trapped in horrible Eisteddfod Halls watching people, with conviction, demolish everyone from Bach to Bartok”, says Jahn. It takes a slightly “off” mind to ally the talents of Luciano Pavarotti with the Friends that Stok has lumped him with, not to mention the chaos which can unfold when William Tell meets two chickens. “We are quite sure that what happens during tonight’s performance of Bach’s Prelude #1, Book 1, will demonstrate quite aptly the mayhem which often happens in performances, but which the public never sees, and if you think that you’re the only one who has bad days at work, consider this: It’s hard enough trying to play Mozart properly, but when the universe conspires against you, it’s well nigh impossible”.
This is a performance you have to see. It is theatre unlike anything anybody has seen in this country. Not only will you be entertained beyond your wildest expectations but don’t be surprised if the performers move you to tears to boot. The music is performed flawlessly, physical theatre gains new meaning and in the end you stand amazed at the amount of raw talent on stage.
